Satguru Nanak Sahib & Bhai Sahib Mardana Ji in Port-of-Spain.
The itenary of navigator(Later the governer of New Spain), Mr. Horando Cortez reveals that Satguru Nanak Sahib was in Port-of Spain upto the last of January,1519.( ref. PP 38 of The Discovery And Conquest of Mexico, by A. P. Mandslay). There were 18000 Indians in Trinidad, when Columbus discovered Port of Spain in 1498( ref. PP 159 of" Voices in The Street"). There were two epidemics there, one, of Slave-Trade and the ,second one, of Small-Pox.The people of Port of Spain Island became friendly with Satguru Nanak Sahib and Bhai Sahib Mardana Ji.There are two important and historical references in Port-of- Spain's Book. The first ref, is that of 1579 when the Golden Temple was started to be built. This means Satguru Ram Das Sahib was alive. This indicates that the foundation of Darbar Sahib was laid by Satguru Ram Das Sahib in the presence of Sahibzada Arjan Sahib and others. This is against the traditional belief that the foundation was laid by Satguru Arjan Sahib's time. This means the earlier historians named Kavi Bhagat Singh of Gurbilas Patshahi-VI, Kuer Singh, Kesar Singh Chibber and others had either wrong information or knowingly they changed this information.Gurmat historian, Bhai Gurdas Ji also confirmed that Satguru Ram Das was alive when Amritsar( Earlier called Chak-Guru-Ramdas)" was built. ``Amritsar Wich Jot Jagawe" ,Varan Bhai Gurdas Ji.This means the name of Chak Guru Ram as was changed as Amritsar in the times of Satguru Ram Das himself. For the first time, Bute Shah( Ghulam Muhiyuudin) has knowingly said that the foundation of Darbar Sahib was laid by Sain Mian Mir.This is said in the latter part of 19th century, hence it is unbelievable. Therefore, the statement written in West Indies book is absolutely understandable.According to Bhai Gurdas Ji, Satguru Ram Das Sahib was alive when Amrisar was built. Next task of Satguru's was the formation of Darbar Sahib.Hence the statement given in 1989 book is fully tallied with the statement of Bhai Gurdas Ji.

This Ancient Indian Carving was built along with the Hindu Temple in Port of Spain, in 1846.This means upto 1846, it was believed that the foundatin stone of Darbar Sahib was laid by Satguru Ramdas Ji, But Bute Shah had changed it to the Fifth Nanak, that is Satguru Arjan Sahib in his history book of 1848.
Coming again to the visit of Satguru Nanak Sahib, it has been stated that the music played is called "Tan-Music" which is played by string instruments. All the rags are sung by this Tan-Music.Bhai Sahib Mardana Ji is known as the player of Tan-Music.As regards the history of music in West-Indies, It comes from East and West Africa in sixteenth century(1501)(Ref, from Congo Drum to Steelband, by Dr. J. D. Elder).Bhai Mohun Singh, Beer Singh and Mr. Ram Dayal came to Port of Spain, on a ship named, Fatel Rozack, on 30th May, 1845( ref.The Book on Trinidad, by Gerard Besson, and Bridget Brereton,1991).Hindu Temple was being built at that time, so Bhai Beer Singh and Bhai Mohun Singh joined Mr. Ram Dayal and others and kept "Panj Granthi "(hand written and some Gutka Sahib.on a cot in the Hindu Mandir. From the Ancient Indian Carving, you can read the reference.Around 1851, when more Sikh families arrived, Sikhs have rented a room on Upper Duke Street. They made the first Gurdwara Sahib, in Port of Spain
Satguru Nanak Sahib and Bhai Sahib Mardana Ji stayed in a tent, near the slaves in old prision, located on the west side of George Street, between Queen Street and Prince Street. There was a fire in 1808, and the old prision was destroyed completely. When william Munro was the governor, he had new prision built(Which is one of the oldest buildings in the city,in the upper part of Clarance St.(today's Fredick Street).(ref.
